We’ve recommended some foods and adequate hydration. It is crucial to know what you are putting in your body will help nourish and heal you. Let’s go through some food and drinks that we highly DO NOT recommend as you enter pregnancy and motherhood.

1. Sugary drinks/ Soft drinks/ Caffeinated drinks

You may be tempted to reach out for a sugary drink/ soft drink/ caffeinated drink because your energy level may be at the lowest post pregnancy. Please remember that the energy you gain from these drinks are not long lasting and may cause you to crash and have even lower energy after. Caffeinated drinks are acceptable only if it is consumed in reasonable amount. Too much caffeine may result in an irritable and fussy little one.

2. Alcohol

If you’ve consumed alcohol, it will transfer over to your little one during breastfeeding. This may affect their growth, development, and sleep patterns. Not drinking alcohol is the way to go for pregnant woman and new mothers.

3. Fish with high mercury

Although seafood is a great source of healthy fats and other nutrients as a lean protein, consumption of fishes with high mercury such as swordfish, shark, and king mackerel may affect the health of your little one as they consume your breast milk.

4. Processed food/ Fast food

This goes without saying that processed food/ fast food will not nourish and heal your body although it may feel like your soul have been healed. This food category is loaded with calories, fat, sugar and salt and lacks nutrients like fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Eating processed food/ fast food may also cause weight gain or make it extra hard to lose the baby weight.

5. Foods that causes gas

Dairy, caffeine, beans, etc. are some foods that may cause gas in your little one. Your little one may burp/pass gas a lot, have a hard belly, feel bloated, and fuss a lot if you consume these kinds of food.

6. Foods that you and/or your little one is allergic to

Common allergies include shellfish, peanut, milk, etc. If you find that your little one did not react well during breastfeeding after you’ve consumed something that may cause an allergy, it is best to see a doctor to do an allergy reaction test to prevent an allergic reaction from happening.
